❤️ Why you will love this recipe
- Easy cake recipe (no layers!)
- Very tasty and rich in dark chocolate flavor
- Perfect vegan cake for Christmas, birthday parties, Valentine's Day or any celebrations
- Made using real orange juice!
- 100% vegan, eggless and dairy-free!
🗒 Ingredient notes (+ substitutions)

- Flour: I recommend using all-purpose white flour (and not bread flour or cake flour). I like the unbleached organic flour from the brand King Arthur.
- Cacao powder: I used raw cacao powder to make this cake, but use Dutch process cocoa powder if you prefer, both work just as well.
- Oil: I used canola oil, although melted refined coconut oil or other neutral-tasting oil would work well.
- Orange juice: if possible, use freshly squeezed orange juice, but to make it easier, you can also use store-bought orange juice. Using fresh oranges also allows you to get some orange zest for a stronger orange flavor.
- Oat milk: or any dairy-free milk you have.
- Sugar: I used cane sugar, or use regular granulated sugar.

📝 Variations
- Double chocolate cake: you can include chocolate chips in the cake batter for a stronger chocolate taste and more gooeyness.
- Nut: add a handful of chopped walnuts for some crunch.
- Gluten-free chocolate orange cake: swap the regular white flour for a 1:1 GF flour such as the one from Bob's Red Mill.
- Chocolate orange bundt cake: you can make this cake using a bundt cake mold! In that case, watch the cake as it bakes since it will likely need less time in the oven. Check out this vegan chocolate bundt cake recipe for inspiration.
🍽 How to make chocolate orange ganache cake with orange juice

Step 1: In a large bowl, add the flour and sift the cacao powder. Then, add the baking powder, baking soda and salt. Stir to combine until uniform.

Step 2: In a second bowl, add the dairy-free milk, orange juice, sugar, orange zest and oil. Whisk until combined and smooth.

Step 3: Pour the wet mixture over the bowl with the flour.

Step 4: Keep stirring until the cake batter is uniform and make sure there are no dry spots of flour anymore (but do not overmix).

Step 5: Transfer the cake batter to a cake pan (place a sheet of parchment paper in the bottom). I used a 9-inch cheesecake baking dish. Then bake at 350ºF for 35-40 minutes or until a toothpick comes out clean. Unmold the cake and let it cool down completely before decorating.

Step 6: Once the cake is completely cool, then pour the ganache over (find the chocolate orange ganache recipe here), slice and enjoy. For a ganache that's a little thicker, then make it the night before and let it chill in the fridge overnight.

💡 Baking tips
- The ganache is pretty thin and pourable when freshly prepared and warm. To have a ganache that's thicker and more spreadable, then I recommend making it the day before so it has plenty of time to chill in the fridge.
- I highly recommend using a small scale to measure the ingredients. They are easy to get online and pretty cheap! If you don't have any, then use the "Spoon and Level Method" to measure the flour and cacao powder.
- For a super smooth batter without much effort, you can sift the flour and cacao powder while transferring over the mixing bowl.
- Avoid overmixing the batter so the gluten from the flour does not develop, giving you a soft, tender, and light cake.
- Watch the cake closely as it bakes and do not overbake it, all ovens are different! You can use a toothpick to double-check if the cake is done (it should come out clean!).
- Let the cake completely cool down before pouring the ganache!

🍴 Serving suggestions
This ganache chocolate orange cake makes for the perfect treat to enjoy in the afternoon with a cup of warm tea or coffee. If you prefer, you can serve the cake with a more classic dark chocolate glaze.
Feel free to serve the cake with dairy-free vanilla ice cream or vegan whipped cream (such as an oat whipped cream). I often make this plant-based cookie and cream vanilla ice cream, which is great served with this cake.
If serving for a birthday party, then decorate with rainbow sprinkles and during the holiday season, add a dust of crushed candy cane over the chocolate glaze. And if you have some candied orange slices, then make sure to add some over your cake!
❗️ Storage tips
Keep the loaf well covered so it does not dry and try to slice as you need to preserve its moisture. You can keep it on the counter at room temperature for 2 days, but then transfer it to the fridge for up to 5-6 days.

❓ FAQs
Yes! You can simply pour the cake batter equally between 2 x 8-inch cake pans (cover the bottom with parchment paper first) and bake a little less longer. Make sure to let the ganache completely cool down overnight before using.
I do not recommend making this recipe oil-free or the cake risks ending up too dry or dense.
